Degrees and Programs
Duke Global Health Institute offers several educational programs that directly address global health:
- Global Health Certificate for undergraduate and graduate students
- Focus Cluster on Global Health for undergraduates
- Global Health Residency for health professionals
- Master of Science in Global Health
The Global Health Certificate is an interdisciplinary program for undergraduates and graduates that capitalizes on Duke’s diverse strengths in basic and applied sciences, business, humanities and social sciences. The certificate requires six courses (five for graduate students) that cover global health methods, ethics, electives, a capstone course and a relevant field experience.
The Focus Cluster on Global Health for first-year and second-year undergraduates at Duke is a range of interrelated seminars that examines health from the vantage point of different disciplines across the humanities, sciences and social sciences. The global health cluster is open to first-year and second-year students by application. Field trips, travel, community service and research are incorporated into the interdisciplinary Focus learning experience.
A Global Health Residency program has been created jointly between the Duke Global Health Institute and the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health, which administer the program. Through this program, residents in any of the clinical specialties receive an MPH at UNC or eventually an MSc in Global Health at Duke and then spend nine months abroad in a research or clinical-service setting.
A committee of Duke faculty is developing a curriculum for a Master of Science in Global Health. This degree will draw on expertise in Arts and Science, all of Duke’s professional schools, the Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Leadership Program, the Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Research Training Program and the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
