About the Institute

Our Mission

The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) works to reduce health disparities in our local community and worldwide. Recognizing that many global health problems stem from economic, social, environmental, political and health care inequalities, DGHI brings together interdisciplinary teams to solve complex health problems and to train the next generation of global health scholars.

The 20th century was a century of spectacular medicine – and equally spectacular failures to distribute health and health care fairly across the globe.

The Duke Global Health Institute was created in 2006 to address health disparities around the world. It brings knowledge and wisdom from every corner of Duke University to bear on the pressing issues of global health in the 21st century.

We recognize that global health goes far beyond addressing scourges such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, or preparing for the spread of SARS or avian flu. We challenge ourselves to examine the contexts in which these diseases exist. How do poverty, gender, environment, and globalization reinforce existing health disparities, and what can be done in these areas to improve health?

As a university-wide institute, we work with faculty and students from all nine schools at Duke in the areas of research, education, service and policy. Our aim is to become a world-recognized authority in global health and to make significant contributions to the prevention and treatment of health problems, thereby reducing health disparities in vulnerable and underserved populations around the world.

By harnessing the passion for global health – by coordinating what many at Duke already do and expanding on what Duke University and its Medical Center offer – the Duke Global Health Institute allows students and faculty to continue to tackle one of humanity’s greatest challenges.
