Global Health Residency

The Duke Global Health Residency is an expanded, multi-departmental residency program available to all Duke residents in good standing with a participating Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) residency program.  While requirements and timelines are different for each department, the overarching goal is to provide residents with further training and education in the discipline of global health.  This will be achieved by providing residents with the opportunity to receive an advanced degree in global health, provide medical care in a resource-constrained setting, and conduct research at a partnering global health site.

Program Structure
Most Global Health Residents spend their first year working towards an advanced degree.  In addition to regular course lectures required for a master’s degree, residents attend program-specific global health lectures and special events hosted by the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health and the Duke Global Health Institute. This provides opportunities for residents to become an integral part of a wide-range of global health communities. In addition to coursework, residents work with Duke Global Health Faculty to develop a research topic for their field training.

While abroad, residents work alongside local healthcare professionals while also receiving mentorship from Duke Global Health Faculty.  By the end of their second year, residents acquire new tools in health assessment, physical examination, and treatment.  Global Health Residents confront and treat a wide variety of diseases of increased severity while working in resource-poor medical settings.  In addition to providing patient care, residents conduct research on a chosen global health topic. Research projects can be self-initiated or can build from existing on-site faculty research.  During this time faculty assist with developing necessary partnerships and resources.

Site Locations
Site options for field training will continually evolve as Duke’s Global Health Faculty continues to nurture partnerships abroad.  Multiple sites allow the program to match resident’s location and interests.  Please refer to the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health’s website at www.dukeglobalhealth.org for current global health residency sites.
