MD Third-Year Global Health Study Program

The Third-Year Global Health Study Program takes advantage of the Duke School of Medicine’s unique curriculum to allow medical students to take their entire third-year for research activities.

The Third-Year Global Health Study Program provides students with centralized resources and preparation related to health disparities and global perspectives.  The study program ensures that all medical students participating in Study Away experiences receive a common foundation of knowledge and information.  Students attend an orientation that includes cross-cultural competency, responsible conduct of research around the world, importance of establishing respectful and reciprocal relationships with community partners, and differences in economic development infrastructure and culture that make the application of research findings more complex in an international setting.

Students participating in the Third-Year Global Health Study Program can arrange research opportunities through their own contacts, or apply to participate in research efforts at sites where Duke has ongoing relationships with other institutions. As Duke continues to develop global health sites around the world, medical students, as well as their partner communities, will benefit from the opportunity to develop strong relationships between faculty and students at Duke and overseas.
