Post-doctoral training in Global Health
Overview
The Duke Global Health Institute is a university-wide institute that works with schools, departments, centers and other institutes across campus to facilitate and support interdisciplinary programs and collaboration in the areas of research, education, service and policy. DGHI promotes excellence in global health research by supporting a focused portfolio of signature research initiatives on emerging global health themes.
To further its research mission, DGHI will begin supporting two-year postdoctoral fellowships in July 2008. Fellows will work under the mentorship of a DGHI Faculty Member or other Duke faculty whose research focuses on DGHI’s signature research initiatives.
Terms and Expectations
Fellows will be expected to:
• Develop and carry out a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor related to one of DGHI’s signature research initiatives: cardiovascular disease and obesity; global environmental health; gender, poverty, and health; emerging infectious diseases; global aging.
• Present the proposed research to at least one academic audience at a conference or a seminar.
• Write up and submit for publication the results of research or scholarship during the period of the appointment.
• Prepare a research grant application for submission to NIH, NSF or equivalent organization.
• Teach one course annually on a global health topic proposed and developed in collaboration with the faculty mentor and DGHI staff.
• Participate actively in the monthly University Seminar on Global Health and other DGHI activities.
• Participate in a postdoc seminar, to begin in 2009-2010, and provide input on visiting speakers, readings and topics for the seminar and other DGHI activities.
• Conform to standards of responsible conduct in research and comply with all applicable University and departmental policies and procedures.
• Participate in open and timely discussion with the faculty mentor regarding all facets of the fellow’s research and educational activities.
Fellows will be appointed for two academic years, beginning in July 2008 and will receive an annual stipend of $40,000, plus the applicable institutional fringe benefit package, and an additional $3500 in research funds.
Eligibility
Applicants must have completed a doctoral or professional degree before beginning the fellowship. Candidates’ academic discipline is of less importance than their potential for contributing to DGHI’s research agenda. Fellows will be selected on the basis of academic excellence, prior record of accomplishments, potential to bring diverse ideas and experience in global health to Duke University, ability to interact successfully with a broad range of faculty members, and compatibility of research and interests with a sponsoring mentor.
Any questions about the fellowships or the application process should be directed to Lisa Croucher, DGHI Assistant Director for Education and Training, at or 919-681-7716.
