Fieldwork Requirements

During fieldwork, students will apply theoretical knowledge and analytical skills gained through coursework. Students are encouraged to pursue fieldwork in their discipline of interest. If the student already has an international educational experience, he/she can choose to complete a U.S.-based health-related fieldwork. The fieldwork must be completed before the capstone course, which is taken during the Spring semester of the senior year.

Prior to beginning the fieldwork, students will be required to have their community partner submit a statement of commitment. This letter will provide details of the community’s support and a description of the project that will allow the Global Health Certificate Director to ensure that each student obtains adequate educational and global health experience. At the conclusion of the fieldwork, students will be required to submit a written product or conduct a formal presentation on their experience and/or research, and the student’s community collaborator will be asked to submit an evaluation for the student.

Here are the requirements for the fieldwork:

  • Fieldwork approval form submitted to the Certificate Director before beginning fieldwork
  •
  • Must be related to Global Health
  •
  • Can be based locally, nationally or internationally
  •
  • At least 6 weeks or 240 contact hours working at the community level*
  •
  • After fieldwork is complete, submit the Community Collaborator Post-Project Evaluation(.PDF) or (.DOC)
  •
  • Must meet all requirements outlined in the Post-Fieldwork Requirements document.
    • Note that there is both a report and a presentation requirement.

Fieldwork is intended to give students experience with health disparities in communities.  Fieldwork cannot be approved if it takes place exclusively in an office, laboratory, or other facility in which the student is isolated from the community.
