Global Health Certificate Requirements

Undergraduate students must complete a total of 6 courses to be eligible for the Global Health Certificate.

       
  • Students must register for the Global Health Certificate by the end of September in their Junior year.  
  • Students must complete at least 3 courses toward the Certificate by the end of their Junior year.  This should include the Intro course (Multidisciplinary Analysis of Global Health) and an Ethics course.

Graduate students must complete a total of 5 courses to be eligible for the Global Health Certificate.

Both undergraduate and graduate students must complete the internship/fieldwork requirement.
GLOBAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Multidisciplinary Analysis of Global Health (Intro): PubPol 154/PubPol 254/Law 365/Nurs 455
  •  
  • Global Health Methods Course (Undergrads only):  (Methods courses can be used to fulfill either the Methods requirement or an elective requirement.). 
  •  
  • Global Health Ethics Course: (Ethics courses can be used to fulfill either the Ethics requirement or an elective requirement).
  •  
  • Global Health Capstone Course (Taken during spring of Senior year)
  •  
  • 2 Electives from the list of approved Global Health Certificate Electives
  •  
  • Internship/Fieldwork Experience


IMPORTANT UNIVERSITY PARAMETERS ON THE GHC

Please note that the following rules apply to all certificate programs at Duke and cannot be waived under any circumstances:
No more than three of the six courses taken to satisfy the requirements of the certificate may originate in a single department or program.
Students electing to satisfy the requirements of a certificate program may use for that purpose no more than two courses that are also used to satisfy the requirements of a major, minor, or other certificate programs being pursued. That is:

 

     
  • One may not overlap 2 courses in your major and another 2 courses in a minor.
  •  
  • The total number of overlapping courses across all majors/minors/certificates being pursued may not exceed 2.
  •  
  • At least 4 of the courses used for a certificate must be 100-level or above.
  •  
  • At least half the courses taken to satisfy a certificate must be taken at Duke.


INTERNSHIP/FIELDWORK REQUIREMENTS:


During their research or fieldwork, students will apply theoretical knowledge and analytical skills gained through coursework. Students are encouraged to apply to internships in their discipline of interest. The internship must be completed before the capstone course, which they will take during the Spring semester of their senior year. 
 

  • Brief proposal must be made to Certificate Director before beginning internship.
  •    
  • Must be related to Global Health
  •    
  • Can be based locally, nationally or internationally
  •    
  • Must include at least 6 weeks or 240 contact hours
  •    
  • After fieldwork/internship is complete, submit the Community Partner Post Project Work Statement.
  •    
  • Complete the requirements outlined in the Post-Fieldwork Requirements document.


  * If an approved Ethics course cannot be taken before the fieldwork or internship, a written petition must be made to the Global Health Certificate Director along with the proposed outline for the internship.  This petition must be submitted before your project can be approved.
