Academic and Research Opportunities for Graduate, Professional and Medical students


Master of Science in Global Health (MSc-GH)

Administered by DGHI, the MSc-GH degree is a full-time graduate level program that helps students gain a better understanding of the diverse causes of and solutions to health problems from an interdisciplinary global perspective. Global Health Certificate

This is a five-course, interdisciplinary program that includes a fieldwork or internship experience, which promotes understanding of health disparities and the determinants of health. Health Policy Certificate

This certificate helps graduate students understand contemporary health policy-making and the broad political dynamics which have conditioned U.S. health policy, past and present. The program also familiarizes students with the ethical dilemmas facing health care providers, patients and policymakers. MD Third-Year Global Health Study Program (GHSP)

This program helps medical students identify mentors, coordinate a project, and find funding for a research experience that focuses on reducing health disparities in low and middle income countries and regions. Funding opportunities for medical students - DGHI offers grants to third year medical students interested in doing their research in low and middle income countries. Additional funding sources are available here.

Global Health Residency (Post-Medical School)

The Duke Global Health Residency is an expanded, multi-departmental residency program, administered by the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health, that provides residents with further training and education in global health.  Residents can pursue Duke’s MSc-GH, provide care in a resource-constrained setting, and conduct research at a partnering global health site. Postdoctoral Training

DGHI offers two-year fellowships in which fellows develop and carry out a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor related to one of DGHI’s six signature research initiatives. Fieldwork Opportunities

DGHI encourages application of classroom knowledge through active participation in research and service. Students can gain valuable academic experience and help provide significant value to community partners by engaging with faculty and service organizations to conduct projects of meaning to communities around the globe.
Students can chose from a DGHI fieldwork project, or create a new one in partnership with DGHI or other offices. More than 50 undergraduate and graduate students participated in fieldwork projects across 11 countries in the summer of 2009.
