DGHI Funding

The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) has established various DGHI Grants to encourage intellectual engagement, and domestic and international research and service.

These are internal Duke grants. Some are available to undergraduate, graduate and professional school students, and some are designed for faculty, as stated in each funding announcement.

 

Small International Travel Grants

The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) will offer small international travel awards of up to $5000 each to Duke graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty to pursue global health research opportunities in low or middle income countries.

Amount: up to $5000

Fieldwork and Research Grants

These funds may be used for fieldwork or research of relevance to global health, locally or internationally.

Amount: up to $5000
Application deadline: 5PM March 5th

Conference Presentation Grants

These funds may be used for travel to conferences or scholarly meetings at which a student is giving an oral presentation, either as part of a panel or an individual presentation.

Third Year Medical Student Grants
To encourage and support the participation of third year Duke medical students in global health research, the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) is offering grants of up to $12,500 for rising third year students interested in doing their research overseas.  View full information here.

Pilot Funding:  Bioengineering Research Projects for Global Health

Through a grant from the Provost’s Common Fund, the Duke Global Health Institute and the Department of Biomedical Engineering are offering funding for pilot research projects that involve the application of Bioengineering to address problems in Global Health.  Possible topic areas include, but are not limited to, point of care diagnostics, drug delivery and the development of low cost appropriate technology.

To apply, please provide a proposal (5 page single space maximum) describing the proposed project goals, approaches, timeline, plans to use seed funding to secure external funding, and bibliography. Include a budget for up to $15,000 for personnel, supplies or travel.  No indirect costs can be provided.  Project duration should be 6-12 months.  Include CVs of key personnel. Proposals will be reviewed based on the quality of the proposed studies, their relevance to the application of bioengineering to Global Health, and the relevance to research priorities of DGHI. It is also important to show the potential to leverage the pilot grant to secure extramural funding.
