DGHI maintains this annotated list of websites and institutions that offer funding to students and trainees involved in global health efforts. When we hear of a fellowship or other funding opportunity that includes a deadline, we post it on the education and training announcement page. But we encourage students and trainees to peruse these links to find other opportunities as well.
Agency for Science, Technology, and Research: Singapore (A*STAR)
Ph.D. Scholarship.
Albert Schweitzer Fellowship
The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship will select four medical students to spend three months working as fellows at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon on clinical rotations. The program will also select and send up to two Public Health Fellows to serve at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon. Public Health Fellows will work with the hospital’s Community Health Outreach Program, which provides village-based health care, including maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, TB education and follow-up, and malaria prevention and treatment.
American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS)
Established in 1984, the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) is a private, non-profit educational organization that works to facilitate research in North Africa and encourage the free exchange of information between American and North African scholars.In the United States, AIMS serves as the professional association of scholars interested in the region. AIMS sponsors the Journal of North African Studies (JNAS), published by Francis and Taylor, provides grants for American and North African scholars interested in conducting research in the Maghrib, hosts an annual conference and dissertation workshop, and supports the Tangier Summer Advanced Arabic Language Program (TSALP).
American Medical Student Association (AMSA)
Boehringer Ingelheim
Foundation for Basic Research in Biomedicine Travel Allowances: to enable the recipients to visit laboratories further afield in order to study clearly defined techniques useful for their ongoing research and the work of their research group at home. Applications are continuous. Also offers PhD and MD scholarships.
Columbia University
Behavioral Sciences Fellowship in HIV -The program is a postdoctoral research training program that provides intensive training in human sexuality research as applied to HIV prevention and HIV-related health interventions.
Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES)
CIES administers Fulbright grants. Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the program’s inception, approximately 279,500 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential—with the opportunity to exchange ideas and to contribute to finding solutions to shared issues
Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences

Helen Hay Whitney Foundation
To attain its ultimate goal of increasing the number of imaginative, well-trained, and dedicated medical scientists, the Foundation supports early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences.
Hughes Medical Institute Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students
The Medical Fellows Program supports a year of full-time biomedical research training for medical students. The fellowships provide funds to support fellows and meet their research- and education-related expenses. Research may be conducted abroad if the fellow’s mentor is affiliated with a U.S. institution.
International Peace Scholarship Fund:
The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund was established in 1949 to provide scholarships for international women students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada.
Josephine de Kármán Fellowships
The purpose of this fellowship program is to recognize and assist students whose scholastic achievements reflect high standards.
Lady Davis Fellowship Trust
The trust provides the opportunity for leading scientists and scholars, post-doctoral researchers, and doctoral students from abroad to teach, study, and participate in research in Israel at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and at the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa. Leverhulme Trust Study Abroad Studentships
The Study Abroad Studentships supports postgraduate and postdoctoral scholars from the UK.
Luce Scholars Program
The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends and internships for fifteen young Americans to live and work in Asia each year. Must be nominated by your university
PAHO/WHO Fellowships
Fellowships provide opportunities for advanced study in public health fields that are not customarily available in the fellow’s home country. They are intended to promote the international exchange of scientific knowledge and techniques related to health.
Researcher Exchange Programme (RXP)
The Researcher Exchange Programme (RXP) aims to promote the development of scientific cooperation and contact between the United Kingdom and other countries. Open to researchers from an institution outside of the UK that wants to develop a link with a research partner in the UK.
Rotary Foundation
The primary objective of the scholarships program is to promote international understanding, as the scholars are expected to serve as ambassadors of goodwill during the term of their scholarships. The Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship supports one academic year of full-time study in another country.
University of Cape Town Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: The University of Cape Town (UCT),
Department of Research Development, Postgraduate Funding Office, offers a limited number of Postdoctoral Research Fellowships to be taken up at the university. Preference will be given to applicants who attained the Ph.D. degree no longer than five years ago, and are not yet in academic or research posts and who have not previously held postdoctoral appointments. All South African and foreign candidates are eligible, but preference will be given to applicants who graduated from universities other than UCT.
