Our Work Map

South Africa

Home to more HIV-infected individuals than any country in the world, South Africa is the setting of a five-year study examining the interconnectedness between mental illness, hazardous drug and alcohol use, and traumatic experiences like partner violence and childhood abuse. These risk factors are contributing to sexual behaviors that may make individuals vulnerable to HIV. DGHI faculty are also seeking solutions for effectively addressing the tuberculosis epidemic, malnutrition and malaria control in the country. Students are also engaged in research projects that study nutrition and chronic diseases.
