DGHI Faculty Mary Story receives Bar-Or Award

Mary Story PhD RD, professor in Community and Family Medicine and Global Health at Duke University and DGHI associate director for academic programs, was awarded the 2014 Bar-Or Award for Excellence in Pediatric Obesity Research at Obesity Week in Boston, Mass. last week. She was nominated for this distinguished national award for her work on childhood obesity prevention. Upon receiving her award, Story delivered a presentation to Obesity Society members on the progress, pitfalls, and future directions of child obesity prevention. 

With more than 400 scientific publications, Story is a leading scholar in the field of child and adolescent nutrition and child obesity prevention. Through her work, she seeks to understand the multiple factors related to the eating behaviors of youth, as well as environmental, community, and school-based interventions for obesity prevention and health eating. 

Story has been a member of the Obesity Society for several years. The Obesity Society is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to expanding research, prevention, and treatment of obesity and reduction in stigma and discrimination affecting persons with obesity. The society consists of PhDs, MDs, and RDs who work in academia and the private sector and collaborate on particular interests of obesity. 

The Pediatric Obesity section of the Obesity Society presents the Bar-Or Award for Excellence to recognize distinguished members of their section who have positively impacted pediatric obesity research.
