On Monday, October 26, the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) will host the 4th Annual Global Health Showcase from 5-7pm at the Great Hall of the Trent Semans Center for Health Education. This event will bring together interdisciplinary faculty, trainees, staff and students who have engaged in global health fieldwork over the last year to discuss their projects.

More than 40 posters will be presented by students from all academic levels, including undergraduate and graduate global health students, medical students, and Doris Duke FellowsBass Connections and Student Research Training (SRT) project teams will be represented.

According to Lysa MacKeen, assistant director for student fieldwork operations at DGHI, the breadth of topics being presented at Global Health Showcase gives students a chance to see how their own work relates to the larger scope of global health research. In addition, she notes, “With so many DGHI education programs represented, the showcase creates a space in which students, faculty and guests can see how the students’ experiences connect training to practice.”

Gene Washington, Chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University and President and CEO of the Duke University Health System, will deliver opening remarks for the event. In addition, the 2015 Global Health Student Fieldwork Photo Contest winners will be announced (see the 2014 winners here). The winning photos will be displayed at Trent Hall.

This event is a rare chance to see many of the recent and ongoing student global health projects at once. Students will have an opportunity to present their project work to researchers at all levels, from the general public to their faculty mentors. Topics include:

  • Care-seeking behavior after injury in Brazil
  • Diabetes point of care testing in the Peruvian Amazon
  • Interspecies microbial sharing in rural Madagascar
  • Screening for sexual trauma among HIV+ women in South Africa

The event is free and open to the public; no registration is required. Light refreshments will be provided.
