Kate Whetten, professor of public policy, nursing, community and family medicine and global health, has been reappointed to a five-year term as director of the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research (CHPIR), which is housed within the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI).

CHPIR addresses a broad range of health policy and health disparities research issues both in the U.S. and globally, particularly related to understanding the interactions of structural inequities and life course events on health-related beliefs and behaviors. Much of the research centers around identifying points of potential behavior change and interventions at the policy, provider, community, family and individual levels.

CHPIR research has a strong focus on persons with traditionally stigmatized conditions such as HIV/AIDS, mental health disorders substance abuse disorders and risk-taking behaviors. Many CHPIR researchers study trauma in childhood and its long-term ramifications and on children who are orphaned and separated from parents. CHPIR faculty have also made significant contributions to DGHI’s education programs.

“I am delighted that Kate has agreed to stay on as director of CHPIR,” said DGHI director Michael Merson. “She has an impressive track record of success as the center’s leader and has positioned it well for its future work.”
