NIH: Science of Dissemination and Implementation

March 15-16, 2009:
The *3rd Annual NIH conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation * will be held on March 15-16, 2010 in Bethesda , Maryland . The annual conference is a large scientific forum for information-exchange and networking among researchers working in the newly emerging fields of dissemination and implementation research. The theme of this year’s conference is *Methods and Measurement *. There was very high turnout (indeed oversubscribed) at the conference last year and the organizers expect an even larger turnout this year. The conference is free and if you wish to attend we suggest you sign up early through the website : ttp://conferences.thehillgroup.com/obssr/DI2010/registrationform.cfm

This conference is an excellent opportunity for Fogarty grantees to learn about the latest advances and research in dissemination and implementation science. While the conference largely focuses on research in the United States and Canada, last year Fogarty played a critical role in higlighting the importance of implementation science research in low- and middle-income countries. You can *submit an abstract through *http://conferences.thehillgroup.com/obssr/DI2010/abstracts.html. Please see the attached the Call for Proposals (or click on the website above), which has information on the conference, registration, and instructions for abstract submission. On page 3, you will see that *international implementation science research (bullet 5 and 6) * is one of the domains of interest to the conference. The deadline for submission is *November 6, 2009. *

To make full use of the knowledge and expertise that will be present at the 3rd Annual NIH Dissemination and Implementation Conference, *Fogarty will host a one-day satellite networking meeting entitled “ Implementation Science and Global Health” * immediately following the main conference on *March 17 *. This meeting will focus on (but not be limited to) the implementation science research, training and curriculum development projects of Fogarty Grantees and Trainees. At this point, we are in the early planning stages for this meeting and would like to hear from you, the grantees, about areas of dissemination and implementation research you would like to see showcased.

Examples include:

Training international implementation science researchers – what are the skills and tools needed to equip researchers for implementation science work?

The application of implementation science research methods in resource-constrained settings.

Strategies to build and linkages between in-country implementation science researchers with PEPFAR and PMI program implementers to strengthen service delivery and health outcomes.

Working with national and local governments to bridge the research to policy gap.

European Healthcare Policy and Politics

November 20, 2009:
The Duke Center for European Studies welcomes you to join us for a conference on European Healthcare Policy and Politics on FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20, 2009. In collaboration with the UNC Center for European Studies, we invite all Duke and UNC faculty and students to attend the conference for any or all speakers. The conference will take place in the Rhodes Conference room in the Sanford Building at the Terry Sanford School of Public Policy from 830am to 430pm.

As any observer of recent healthcare reform debates in the U.S. can attest, Europe has probably never gotten so much attention for its healthcare policy. Unfortunately, much of the public debate on this topic has been ill informed, based on caricature and divorced from the real strengths and real weaknesses of European healthcare. While hardly free of problems, there are many lessons we can learn from how Europe organizes healthcare. Moreover, the history and politics of European healthcare can teach us a great deal as well. The conference aims to inform scholarly and public debate on healthcare politics and policy as well as deepen our understanding of contemporary Europe.

We have been fortunate to invite a multi-disciplinary set of academics who are actively involved in research on European healthcare. Specifically, the conference will feature the following guests:

Sigrun Olafsdottir, Boston University, Sociology: “Successful Health Care Systems? Variations in and Determinants of Public Attitudes in 33 Nations”
           http://www.bu.edu/sociology/faculty/olafsdottir.html

Julia Lynch, University of Pennsylvania, Political Science: “On Death and Taxes: The Politics of Regional Health Inequalities in Europe.”
           http://www.polisci.upenn.edu/~jflynch/research.html

Mauricio Pabon, Harvard University, Public Health: “Wealth and Health in Europe and the United States: Are wealthy Americans healthier than poor Europeans?”
           http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/research/mauricio-avendano-pabon/

Paul Dutton, Northern Arizona University, History: “Voices from the Past: Health Care Reform in France and the U.S. Debate”
           http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/pvd/

Kieke Okma, New York University, Healthcare Management: “European Healthcare Reform”
           http://kiekeokma.nl/index.html

Each guest will give a presentation of approximately 35 minutes, and will be followed by a commentary of a local discussant, and discussion.

Please join us on November 20 for a stimulating intellectual debate on European healthcare policy and politics. If you will be able to attend, we would appreciate that you RSVP to Sharon Peters at sharon.peters@duke.edu
by noon on Monday November 16. This will allow us to order sufficient food for the lunch. Of course, we would be happy to have you in attendance for any part of the event. Feel free to just show up for whatever you can.

November 18, 2009:
Background on UNC Project - Malawi

More than twenty years ago, faculty from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were invited by the Malawian government to help the country develop STI treatment protocols. UNC has been working in Malawi ever since.

In 1999 UNC partnered with the Malawi Ministry of Health to establish the UNC Project-Malawi
<http://www.id.unc.edu/malawi>
, a research, care and training facility in the capital city of Lilongwe.

Like much of sub-Saharan Africa, Malawi faces significant healthcare-related challenges. Malawi has only 2 physicians per 100,000 people, and the average life expectancy is 39 years. There is a high burden of HIV, malaria, TB and other infectious diseases straining the country’s limited healthcare infrastructure.

Mission in Malawi

The mission of UNC Project-Malawi is to identify innovative, culturally acceptable, and relatively inexpensive methods of reducing the risk of HIV/STI and infectious disease transmission through research; strengthen the local research capacity through training and technology transfers; and improve patient care for the people of Malawi.

November 11, 2009:
As part of the Humanities in Medicine Lecture Series, Dr. Jennifer Hawkins will speak on, “What is Expoitation and Can We Avoid It in Clinical Research in the Developing World?” Many clinical trial designs used in the developing world would be inappropriate here in the developed world. Despite the claims of some critics, use of these trial designs need not be exploitative of poor, uneducated subjects. It all depends. This talk explores what distinguishes cases where such designs are exploitative from cases where they are not. Jennifer Hawkins, PhD, is currently Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. In January of 2010, she will join the Duke faculty with a joint appointment in Philosophy and the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities and History of Medicine. She is the co-editor with Ezekiel J. Emanuel of Exploitation and Developing Countries: The Ethics of Clinical Research (Princeton University Press, 2008). She writes about research ethics, the nature of coercion, informed consent, the nature of individual decision-making and also about hard to define concepts such as well-being and quality of life. She is currently writing a book about well-being.

Community Health and Activity Mapping Project: NYU's Eric Green

October 27, 2009:
Dr. Eric Green, a postdoctoral researcher at the Program for the Survivors of Torture at New York University, will speak at Duke on his recent work in East Africa.

Green has done extensive social mapping work in northern Uganda with refugee populations and is now researching the impact of microfinance programs on women internally displaced by war. Green’s visit is hosted by ISIS’s Tech and New Media Program, which highlights how technology is being used in new ways to understand or address social challenges.

Community Health and Activity Mapping Project (CHAMP):
Characteristics of the social and physical environment — the social ecology — can positively or negatively influence the health and well-being of adolescents, including their ability to avoid contracting HIV and other diseases. This environmental/structural view suggests that risk for disease cannot be solely explained by characteristics of individuals, such as knowledge of HIV transmission or attitudes towards risky sexual behavior. The broader social ecology — from micro-level influences such as household resources, neighborhood disorder, and social networks to macro-level factors such as laws and policies — can restrict or enhance individual agency to avoid risk. Thus in developing prevention interventions, it is necessary to understand and address social-ecological factors that influence health in a particular context. This talk will examine the use participatory mapping and geospatial technologies to understand the context of disease and to inform the development of a setting-level HIV prevention intervention in Muhuru Bay, a small fishing village on the shore of Lake Victoria in western Kenya.
