Funding Opportunity: NSF Ethics Education in Science and Engineering: Deadline March 2009

The National Science Foundation is soliciting applications for its Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE) program.

The Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE) program accepts proposals for research and educational projects to improve ethics education in all of the fields of science and engineering that NSF supports, especially in interdisciplinary or inter-institutional contexts.  Proposals must focus on improving ethics education for graduate students in those fields, although the proposed programs may benefit advanced undergraduates in addition to graduate students.

Estimated program budget, number of awards and average award size/duration are subject to the availability of funds. The maximum award amount is expected to be $300,000. Anticipated funding amount is $1.85 million for an estimated 5 to 12 Standard Grants. The maximum award duration is expected to be 36 months.

An eligible institution, such as Duke University, may submit only one proposal as lead institution (there is no limit on the number of proposals under which an organization may be included as a non-lead collaborator or sub-awardee). Because of this restriction, an internal review of prospective proposals is necessary, and I ask that anyone interested in submitting a proposal in response to this solicitation forward the following materials to Ken Macdonald in the Office of Research Support (, 681-5988) by the March 1, 2009 internal deadline:

—a letter of endorsement from the PI’s department chair or dean (two-page maximum).
—a draft, abridged Project Description (three-page maximum, including figures, excluding references).

For additional information, please refer to the program announcement.
