Winners of 2011 Global Health Fieldwork Photo Contest

The Duke Global Health Institute is proud to present the winners of its annual Student Fieldwork Photo Contest. Each year, DGHI invites students from across Duke to submit photos that illustrate how and where they spent their summer fieldwork. This year, dozens of undergraduate and graduate students entered whose fieldwork and research projects spanned the globe and addressed issues like orphan care, mental health, health education, and tuberculosis screening.

The first place winner is global health certificate student and economics major Andy Wu who worked in Beijing China. His project was on the economic burden of pediatric burn injuries.

Judges said “this is the one! It’s an amazing portrait with wonderful expression in the eyes. The colors are strong and symbolic, but don’t detract from the sad reality of the hand.”

The second place winner is global health certificate student and public policy major Stephanie Rotolo who worked in Togo this summer. Her project focused on the coexistence and cross-utilization of indigenous and bio-medicine.

Judges said “this photo is well-focused and exposed, has nice colours, and has a great caption. It is a great environmental portrait.”

The third place winner is medical student Theodor Sauer for his photo from Lima, Peru. His third-year project focused on tuberculosis screening among Peruvian school children.

Judges said “this photo tells a complete story; love the composition; the text is simple and straightforward; each health worker playing their role as a team.”

The photo contest judges panel included a Duke visual arts faculty member, a Duke alumnus, a photography editor from The Chronicle and global health faculty and staff. Each photo was judged based on five areas of photo quality: global health relevance, technical quality, aesthetic quality, creativity and supporting text.
