Duke Global Health PLUS
(Placement of Life-changing Usable Surplus)
What we do
Each year, tens of thousands of dollars of medical equipment and supplies within Duke University Health System (DUHS) are designated as "surplus." Surplus equipment includes items set aside because they are being replaced by newer equipment, or medical supplies and equipment that have been prepared for but not actually used in surgical or other medical procedures.
This equipment can change lives in developing countries.
The mission of Duke Global Health PLUS is to make this surplus medical equipment and material from DUHS available to healthcare professionals around the world.
But we take this idea one step further — we also use the knowledge and resources from different schools, departments and centers within Duke to ensure that the people receiving the donations know how to use and maintain them. In this way, no donations are left unused in dusty corners for lack of training, lack of replacement parts, or lack of someone to fix them when problems arise. This extra step ensures that our gifts keep giving.
How We Choose What Goes Where
Duke Global Health PLUS is administered through the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI ). Duke faculty or Duke-affiliated physicians can apply (Word Doc application form) for equipment, supplies and support for projects to improve health in developing countries. These projects do not need to be officially funded by Duke, but must have a Duke faculty member as a sponsor.
Duke faculty, staff, students or affiliated physicians who wish to work with Duke to provide non-medical supplies and equipment to charitable causes both locally and internationally should contact the Duke University and Duke Medicine Surplus Program . For more information about the Duke Global Health PLUS program, read the full program description (download Word Doc), or email questions to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
