Policy and Practice

Tackling global health problems requires more than biomedical discoveries. An important facet of global health are the policy decisions made by governments, businesses, organizations and communities that affect health through their direct effects on both prevention and treatment of illness. What non-medical determinants of health (gender, poverty, violence) influence the behavior of populations and make them more vulnerable to disease? What laws or procedures create barriers to the just distribution of health-related benefits and services? How do individuals or groups learn about health services and make use of them? These are just a few of the questions that health policy research tackles.

The Duke Global Health Institute responds to the needs of decision makers in the field of global health by providing non-partisan advice on policy issues related to our research endeavors. Policy recommendations are based on sound analysis undertaken by experts at Duke and a wide array of public and private partners.

CSIS Commission on Smart Global Health Policy

DGHI Founding Director Michael Merson is a member of the CSIS Commission on Smart Global Health Policy, which brings together a diverse, prominent group of American opinion leaders to consider a long-term, strategic approach to global health.
