Field Sites
The Duke Global Health Institute is creating a network of international sites that benefit local communities while generating cutting-edge research and offer learning experiences for students.
These sites most often spring from the enthusiasm and creativity of an individual or program at Duke. DGHI supports the development of these sites, in cooperation with the local communities, into comprehensive interdisciplinary projects that address the health disparities of the region.

Africa & the middle east
Moshi, Tanzania
Duke’s most recognized and developed international research effort is in Moshi, Tanzania. The site is centered at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC), home to Tanzania’s second largest medical school.
Muhuru Bay, Kenya
Duke is working with WISER (the Women’s Institute for Secondary Education and Research) in Muhuru Bay, Kenya to build the region’s first girls’ secondary boarding school and research center for women in the region.
Eldoret, Kenya
Duke is a member of the America/Sub-Saharan Africa Network for Training and Education in Medicine (ASANTE) consortium located at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. DGHI plans to support the establishment of a reproductive health services and research program at this site under the direction of Dr. Jeff Wilkinson from the Department Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Kampala, Uganda
Duke neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Haglund has partnered with Global Health PLUS to take equipment and supplies to New Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. The hospital will soon establish a new neurosurgical training program co-directed by Dr. Haglund. DGHI plans to establish collaborative ties with other departments at Makerere University Medical School and the University’s Institute of Public Health.

North America
Durham, North Carolina
Duke Global Health Institute works closely with the Duke University Health System and with researchers from throughout Duke University to understand and reduce the health disparities that exist in Durham, North Carolina, and throughout our region.

Asia & the Pacific
Singapore
The Duke-National University of Singapore (NUS) Graduate Medical School opened its doors to students in 2007. This partnership in Singapore will provide a base for global health research and education efforts in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia. The School anticipates making 25 tenure-track faculty appointments by 2009, up to eight of which will be in the area of health services research.
Beijing, China
Duke Medicine and the Peking University Health Sciences Center (PUHSC) in Beijing, China, have signed an agreement that commits both institutions to working together to improve education, research and health care over a seven-year period. One component of this agreement is the establishment of a Duke-Peking University Center on Global Health.
