Price and faculty members discussed Fuqua’s unusual approach to the challenges facing the African continent. Rather than transplanting a generic management model, Fuqua seeks to support existing institutions. This approach includes a partnership with the Global Business School Network enabling professors from African business schools to participate in a multidisciplinary short course at Duke; discussions with the Johannesburg-based Wits Business School about programs to assist first-time and social entrepreneurs in South Africa; and on the global health front, implementing new ways to use the private sector to help stem the shortage of health care workers in Africa.
Congressman Price chairs the House Democracy Assistance Commission, which works with legislatures in emerging democracies around the world to build technical expertise in a range of areas, including the legislative process, budgeting, research and information services and ethics. The commission recently completed a trip to Africa, which included a visit to one of its partner legislatures in Kenya.
