The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) launched the Commission on Smart Global Health Policy earlier this year.  As global health leaders, we wish to bring this dynamic and important initiative to your attention and encourage you to be part of it.

Comprised of 26 prominent American opinion leaders, and co-chaired by CARE President Helene Gayle and Admiral Bill Fallon, the Commission is charged with developing recommendations for a long-term strategic U.S. approach to global health. This is a Commission of unprecedented diversity and caliber; top leaders in foreign policy, security, media, Congress, and health have come together to reflect on the goals and strategies that should guide U.S. approaches on global health over the next 15 years. The Commission will benefit from the seasoned perspectives of Robert Rubin, Donna Shalala, John Negroponte, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Rex Tillerson, Michael Merson, and Bill Frist, among others.

The Commission wants to involve people who are passionate and knowledgeable about global health. They are especially interested in learning how to build sustainable support among the American public. The Commission hopes people will share their knowledge and ideas.

The Commission held a successful public consultation and launch in April and convened its first deliberative session in June. Members will travel to Kenya in August which will culminate in a public forum with senior Kenyans. In the fall, the Commission will hold public consultations around the country, meet again in mid-October to deliberate, and deliver its report in early 2010 at a major public event, followed by several activities to build interest in its recommendations.
