DGHI Student Projects Coordinator Lysa MacKeen has been honored with the DukeEngage Excellence in Mentoring Award for 2013 for her commitment to helping students make the most of their fieldwork experience in global health.

Students mentored by MacKeen said  that she invests so much time and energy sharing everything she knows and they were lucky to work with her.  Students also said they were challenged by MacKeen and their fieldwork projects benefitted because of it.

One student said, “She has helped make my DukeEngage experience that much more meaningful and life-changing, and that is why I truly believe Lysa should be recognized with this award.”

Each year, the DukeEngage award is presented to a faculty member or administrator who has demonstrated exceptional mentorship to DukeEngage Independent Project participants, and exceptional leadership and vision in promoting civic engagement within higher education.

MacKeen, who joined DGHI in 2010, coordinates the student projects program for undergraduate, MSc-GH and medical students. She works with faculty to develop project opportunities for students, connects students to existing opportunities at DGHI and across Duke, and mentors students each year. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Guinea and lived in West Africa for 12 years.
