Ethical Considerations for Global Health Volunteer and Trainee Programs

Academic global health programs are burgeoning, and so are the opportunities for students and trainees from rich countries to dip their toes into global health through short-term training and volunteer experiences in resource-poor settings. But where are the guidelines to make sure these experiences are conducted in an ethical manner?

That is the question raised in a commentary in the September 24 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) by John Crump, a Duke physician who serves as the site coordinator for the Duke Global Health Institute’s work in Moshi, Tanzania, and Jeremy Sugarman, of the Berman Institute of Bioethics and Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.
