Hello. My name is Kim Alexander. I am a student in the accelerated BSN program at Duke School of Nursing and recently I had the opportunity to participate in the “Exploring Medicine” trip to Honduras offered through the Duke medical school in collaboration with the nursing school. Our team consisted of nursing students, PA students, and medical students, instructors from those three disciplines and was spearheaded by Dr. Dennis Clements, a fearless leader who has been dedicated to work in Honduras for many years. The trip was coordinated by Heifer International, an organization that focuses on long-term, sustainable community development throughout the world.

There were so many facets of this trip that I loved and learned from, that is it is difficult to sum up the experience in five minutes, but here I going to try. Our team spent our most of our time in Las Mercedes, a rural community in Central Highlands of Honduras. Las Mercedes is an impoverished village perched on a mountainside with dirt roads and small tin roofed homes.
