On Sept. 8 and 9, Duke University and Duke Medicine will launch the Duke Institute for Health Innovation (DIHI) and host an inaugural “Summit on Transformative Innovation in Health Care.”

The new institute will catalyze Duke’s efforts to harness the talents of leaders from across health care, academia, government and industry to develop new approaches to delivering care; train the health care workforce; and apply technology and health policy to improve health care access, quality and affordability.

Many of the ideas that emerge from this work will be piloted within the Duke University Health System, which will serve as a “living laboratory” that refines, validates and scales the innovations.

“DIHI will cement Duke’s position as a cutting-edge research and care-delivery enterprise by creating a hub where health care thought leaders -- at Duke and beyond -- can collaborate on innovative solutions to today’s health care challenges,” said Victor J. Dzau, M.D., chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University and chief executive officer of Duke University Health System. “In addition to promoting multidisciplinary collaboration, DIHI will establish an infrastructure for funding and testing new ideas, while preparing our health care workforce to face the challenges of tomorrow.”

Some of the world’s foremost leaders in health innovation will gather Sept. 9, 2013, on Duke’s campus in Durham, N.C., for the inaugural summit, which will explore the future of health care, the need and the opportunities for health innovation, and the role of universities in driving innovation.

Speakers and panelists will include Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Health Care Innovation and Value Initiative at the Brookings Institution, and former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; Lord Ara Darzi, KBE, chairman of the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London, and former Minister of Health for the United Kingdom; health care economist Uwe Reinhardt, Ph.D., Princeton University; Sir Andrew Witty, chief executive officer of GlaxoSmithKline; Sue Siegel, chief executive officer of healthymagination GE; and Raymond Baxter, Ph.D, senior vice president of Community Benefit, Research and Health Policy with Kaiser Permanente.

Following the launch, DIHI will continue holding monthly innovation workshops at Duke, providing a forum for attendees to propose and strengthen new ideas, discuss pressing health system challenges and identify opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaboration.
