Our Work

Air pollution and pneumonia in Jiangsu -- a health warning system

Project Overview

1. To identify the major atmospheric factors that contribute to mortality from respiratory diseases, especially acute respiratory infections (ARI) such as pneumonia.
2. To quantify the contribution of each of these factors to the total burden of ARI mortality in Jiangsu.
3. To build an online early warning system (EWS) that will assist public health planning by providing short-term (1 to 4 week) forecasts of ARI case numbers for the 13 divisions of Jiangsu.

The Jiangsu provincial government wishes to implement a health warning system that will reduce mortality from ARIs in periods of high air pollution.
