Development of A Mental Health Inclusive Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury Register for Low-Resource Settings (The Grey Register)
Project overview
This study is part of a larger initiative to establish a pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) registry in Nigeria. pTBI is a leading cause of unintentional injury in children and is often accompanied by long-term neuropsychiatric complications that remain underrecognized in clinical care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). At LASUTH, we will conduct a mixed-methods study: a retrospective review of pediatric TBI cases (2020–2024) to assess current documentation and gaps in care, and qualitative interviews with healthcare providers, health information managers, policymakers, and caregivers to explore the feasibility of a multidisciplinary registry with integrated mental health measures. By prioritizing mental health alongside neurosurgical outcomes, this project seeks to build a sustainable registry that strengthens documentation, informs healthcare planning, and supports improved long-term outcomes for children with pTBI in resource-limited settings.
