Cardiovascular disease

In addition to the widely-recognized epidemic of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the US, rates of these chronic diseases are growing dramatically in India, China and other transitional economies in Asia and Latin America, as well as urban populations in sub-Saharan Africa. More than 82% of CVD deaths take place in low- and middle-income countries and effect men and women equally (WHO 2011). DGHI researchers are focused on hypertension and heart failure because they are the two most common clinical manifestations of CVD.

DGHI is actively collaborating with the Duke Clinical Research Institute, Duke Heart Center and Duke Translational Medicine Institute to develop interdisciplinary projects in this field, including ongoing work in Africa, India and China.
