Measuring food environments using GPS: Associations with childhood obesity
April 8, 2013 | 3:00pm - 4:00pm ET
Join us for a Global Health Conversations talk with Dr. Tom Burgoine, Career Development Fellow from the University of Cambridge, England.
Tea and biscuits will be served.
About the topic:
Environmental exposures are potentially related to body weight in children. We used GPS data to estimate food, built, and physical activity facility exposure, at home, at school, and whilst commuting to/from school, for a sample of children in North Carolina, in relation to BMI. We found relationships between BMI and fast food availability at home, and neighborhood walkability at school in girls, but no similar associations for boys. We found no associations between BMI and route exposures.
About the speaker:
Dr. Burgoine obtained his PhD in Health Geography from the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University, UK. He also has an MA in Human Geography Research, and a Geography BSc, also both from Newcastle University.
