I am currently Professor and Chair of Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka and serve as the Ruhuna Medical Faculty lead of the Duke - Ruhuna Collaboration. I am a board certified Medical Microbiologist and obtained my MBBS from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1991 and completed my MD in Medical Microbiology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2000 and further trained at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Public Health Laboratory, Bristol, United Kingdom in 2001.

I also serve as the Chairperson, Board of Study in Microbiology, Postgraduate Institute of Medicine University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and the Chairperson of the Ethics Review Committee (IRB), Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka and as a member of the National Health Research Council of Sri Lanka.
