ELA Requirements

Experiential learning activities (ELAs) are part of the requirements of many of our educational programs. Students can choose from several Duke and DGHI field-based programs that are designed to help you address a global health question, context or challenge.  

Global Health Majors

Requirement

Experiential learning activity (ELA) of 320 hours or 8 weeks duration that addresses a global health question, context, or challenge

Faculty-mentored independent research

Internship

 

Steps

  1. Complete an approved global health ethics course
  2. Meet with advisor to discuss ELA
  3. Review current ELA projects and funding
  4. Apply for approval of your proposed ELA
  5. Complete pre-engagement training and re-entry workshop
  6. Complete ELA report

Master of Science in Global Health

Requirement

10-week field-based project, typically completed in the summer between first and second year of study

Faculty-mentored independent research

Internship

Independent research project connected to a Bass Connections team

Steps

  1. Explore recent MS-GH student research projects

  2. Discuss with advisor and/or faculty mentor

  3. Review additional materials in Canvas 

Graduate Certificate

Requirement

Field projects are optional and can be completed at any time during studies. Projects must be 4 weeks or 120 hours.
