Experiential learning activities (ELAs) are part of the requirements of many of our educational programs. Students can choose from several Duke and DGHI field-based programs that are designed to help you address a global health question, context or challenge.
Global Health Majors
Requirement
Experiential learning activity (ELA) of 320 hours or 8 weeks duration that addresses a global health question, context, or challenge
Steps
- Complete an approved global health ethics course
- Meet with advisor to discuss ELA
- Review current ELA projects and funding
- Apply for approval of your proposed ELA
- Complete pre-engagement training and re-entry workshop
- Complete ELA report
Master of Science in Global Health
Requirement
10-week field-based project, typically completed in the summer between first and second year of study

Faculty-mentored independent research
Internship
Independent research project connected to a Bass Connections team

Graduate Certificate
Requirement
Field projects are optional and can be completed at any time during studies. Projects must be 4 weeks or 120 hours.
