Ethics in Short Term Medical Missions (Workshop)
Short term medical missions have frequently been criticized for being insensitive to the population they are serving, sometimes called “helicopter medicine.” This workshop will explore the issues behind this phenomenon and provide material to discuss issues informed by our work in Honduras in the past 15 years. The audience can expect to participate in scenarios that illustrate these principles. The workshop will be led by:
Dennis Clements, Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies Co-Director and professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Community and Family Medicine, Nursing and Global Health, Duke
Matt DeCamp, Professor at the Berman Institute of Bioethics and the Division of General Internal Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University
