Muscle Mass Decline and Sarcopenia Research: Burden, Risk Factors and Intervention Schemes

Stefanos Tyrovolas, PhD
Senior Miguel Servet Researcher, Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu & CIBER de Salut Mental, Universidad de Barcelona
About the lecture
The body's physiological changes such as those in muscle and fat mass are strongly related with the aging process and consequently with a variety of comorbidities. Muscle loss, when accompanied with decrements in physical performance and/or muscle strength, is characterized as sarcopenia. Sarcopenic obesity is defined when sarcopenia coexists with excess fat. Even though the scientific interest of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity has increased, there is a lack of evidence from cross-national epidemiologic data. In this talk, Stefanos Tyrovolas will briefly present muscle function and the concepts of myopenia, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. In addition, he will analyze sarcopenia findings from his research program and related risk factors, as well as nutrition and exercise intervention schemes to slow down or to reverse progressive muscle mass decline.
Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunches.
About the speaker
Stefanos Tyrovolas has a BSc in Dietetics and Nutrition, a MSc in "Applied Dietetics" and a PhD in Nutrition Epidemiology from the Harokopio University of Athens, Greece. During 2012-2013, he served as a visiting lecturer in the University of Kalamata in the topic of Human Nutrition and Health. Between 2013-2016, he worked as postdoctoral research at CIBERSAM and the Foundation Sant Joan de Deu in the topic of ageing epidemiology, nutrition and chronic disease prevention. His research was focused on cross-national and national large dataset analysis. At the moment, he is working as a Senior Researcher in global healthy ageing, sarcopenia and nutrition, and he is Co-Coordinator of the group Ageing Epidemiology: Factors Associated with Healthy Aging at Foundation San Joan de Deu. He has participated as Key personnel in more than 5 EU Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+ projects and in numerous National (Spanish) research projects related with healthy ageing, big data harmonization and mental health. He has contributed in more than 100 peer reviewed international journals and numerous presentations in national and international congresses. His research interest include ageing epidemiology, sarcopenia, nutrition and public health for the older adults.
