The Caribbean is facing a growing aging population and with it, an increase in cardiovascular disease. How the region is prepared to care for this aging population and the associated increase in cardiovascular disease are major health concerns.
To address these concerns, the Office of Global and Community Health Initiatives (OGACHI) in the Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) and the Pan American Health Organization – Office of Caribbean Program Coordination (PAHO-CPC) are collaborating on a series of three annual conferences to address the joint issues of aging and cardiovascular disease. The first, an invitational continuing education conference on managing cardiovascular disease in the elderly, took place in Barbados, Oct. 8 to 11, 2007 at the Accra Beach Hotel and Resort, Christ Church. The conference was funded by the Duke University School of Nursing, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Duke Global Health Institute, Pfizer, Merck Sharp and Dohme, Duke Center for International Studies, and many in-kind contributions from throughout Duke University.
