Five Duke medical residents and trainees have begun their global health clinical research projects in Africa and South Asia as 2012-2013 Fogarty Fellows. The VECD Fogarty Global Health Fellowship is a prestigious opportunity awarded to a select group of trainees each year.
Funded by the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health, the global health fellowship enables trainees to engage in a year-long mentored research project at an international training site.
This year, Fogarty fellows Paul Park, Matthew Rubach, Steven Sumner, Gayani Tillekeratne and Sky Vanderburg are working in Kenya, Tanzania and Sri Lanka on projects related to chronic diseases, bacterial infections, injury, environmental health and fever.
The program is led at Duke by Nathan Thielman and Eric Velazquez through the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health. Duke is one of four institutions that is part of the VECD Global Health Fellowship Consortium. Other collaborating institutions include Vanderbilt University, Emory University and Cornell University.
