On May 12, the New York Academy of Sciences launched the new “Scientists Without Borders” website. Duke Medicine is one of the partners in this project, which aims to mobilize and coordinate science-based activities that improve quality of life in the developing world.

The Scientists Without Borders site provides a database that provides a way for institutions, organizations, and individuals to share information about what projects they are involved in, what resources they are looking for, and what resources they can offer to others

The New York Academy of Sciences and the United Nations Millennium Project conceived Scientists Without Borders, but the initiative belongs to the community. Anyone who is interested is invited to register and add information to the site. Duke Medicine already has four entries, including information about the Duke Global Health Institute, the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and the Duke Translational Research Institute, as well as more specific information on the Global Health PLUS program.

“Scientists Without Borders is a laudatory project to encourage scientists to find and help each other, something particularly valuable for those working in under-resourced areas of the globe,” says Victor J. Dzau, MD, chancellor for health affairs at Duke University and president/CEO of the Duke University Health System, who serves on the advisory board of Scientists Without Borders. “Duke Medicine has a tradition of crossing intellectual borders to engage in interdisciplinary research. We are excited to participate in this effort to also transcend geographic borders in science.”
