USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah will share a vision of American leadership through development innovation as the speaker of the 2013 Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture at Duke on Thursday, Sept. 12.
Shah will discuss a new model of aid that connects American entrepreneurs with emerging markets and one that fosters innovation in labs that generate cutting-edge and profitable solutions.
The Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture is presented by the Sanford School of Public Policy. This event is co-sponsored by Duke’s Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative, and the Duke Global Health Institute.
As head of the USAID since 2009, Shah directs nearly 10,000 employees in 80 countries working in global health, agricultural productivity, disaster relief, economic growth, the promotion of democracy and combating extreme poverty. One such partnership is with the Social Entrepreneurship Accelerator at Duke, which mobilizes teams of scholars, practitioners, investors and policymakers to identify, assess and build solutions for health care delivery and preventive services in developing countries.
Before taking this position, Shah served as chief scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the under secretary for research, education and economics in the Obama administration. He spent seven years prior with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation after earning his medical degree and master’s degree in health economics.
