Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Assistant Research Professor of Global Health

Dr. Emily Herfel is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and an Assistant Research Professor of Global Health. She is also an affiliate of the Duke Center for Global Reproductive Health.

Currently Dr. Herfel’s roles are primarily clinical.  She is a volunteer professor at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania and serves as the co-leader in Duke ob/gyn global curriculum development. She serves in a supervisory role for Duke OBGYN trainees on their global elective and in capacity building in partnerships with the OBGYN KCMC department.

Dr. Herfel completed the Duke Global Pathway Program and spent a year living in Kisumu, Kenya as an NIH Fogarty Fellow developing and implementing research on beliefs and stigma specific to cervical cancer screening, treatment, and prevention. She has broads interests in women’s global health including cervical cancer screening and treatment, women’s health education and surgical capacity building.
