Genevieve Hunter
Research Program Leader
Genevieve (GV or G) Hunter is a Research Program Leader and Sexuality Educator with more than 30 years of experience. She hails from Philadelphia, PA where she studied Journalism/Communication at Temple University and Human Sexuality Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Genevieve’s work at Duke began 21 years ago at a rural Duke HIV Clinic in Henderson, NC. Initially, she worked as an Outreach Coordinator, working with people living with HIV (PLWH), and leading outreach efforts on the HIV/AIDS Task Force.
In 2006, Genevieve joined the former Health Inequalities Program (HIP) at Duke, before it became the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research (CHPIR). Genevieve worked as an Outreach Specialist on a SAMHSA project for people who were triply diagnosed with HIV, mental illness and substance use disorder. Throughout her time with CHPIR, Genevieve has collaborated on multiple projects including: the AIDS Education and Training Center, the HRSA SPNS Regional Health Information Integration Project, the Clergy Health Initiative, the Duke Health Justice Clinic and the Southern HIV/AIDS Strategy Initiative.
Since 2011, Genevieve has been the lead staff on the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI) in Craven County, North Carolina, funded through the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) at NC DHHS. In 2023, Genevieve became the Project Director of a five-year cooperative agreement known as Eastern North Carolina Health Education for Adolescent Lives (ENC-HEAL), funded by the United States Office of Population Affairs. This project expands teen pregnancy prevention programs under the Duke Teen Health Club to seven counties (Craven, Edgecombe, Halifax, Hertford, Martin, Nash, and Pitt). In addition, the PREP and Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program, (AP3), at NC DHHS, were also funded in 2023. PREP serves Craven County and AP3 serves Greene and Pitt Counties.
Genevieve oversees three teen pregnancy projects and teaches evidence-based programs, while working remotely in Beaufort, NC and New Bern, NC. She also works closely with the CHPIR team in Durham, NC. Genevieve is passionate about working with adolescents and enjoys teaching about sexual health and wellness. Genevieve’s primary goal through her directorship is empowering all young people to have agency over their bodies and their health.
Genevieve’s research interests include human sexuality, adolescent health, teen pregnancy prevention as well as intersectionality in sexual health and sexuality education.
In Genevieve’s free time she enjoys eating great food and listening to music with family, friends and being in nature in the beautiful “Town by the Sea,” Beaufort, NC. She lives with her husband, Trey, their dogs, Sage and Summer, and kitty, Midnight. G is also step-Mom to two wonderful adult children, Caitlin and Chad.
