Adapting the HIV Person-Centered Care Assessment Tool (PCC-AT) for Primary Healthcare Setting

Project overview

Person-centered care (PCC) is an approach that makes HIV service delivery more responsive to the needs and preferences of people living with HIV. It has been widely recognized among HIV communities, promoting health related quality of life and improving long-term wellbeing of people living with HIV.

Through a systematic literature review, JSI developed an assessment tool for PCC practices. This Excel-based tool measures health facility staff perspectives on PCC service delivery within HIV treatment settings (Duffy et al., 2022). The feasibility of the tool has been validated in Ghana and Zambia, especially in urban and tertiary-level HIV clinics. PCC-AT helped facilities identify weaknesses in PCC service provision and close gaps to improve HIV service accessibility, treatment, and retention at the facility level.

With evolving evidence on PCC services and the critical need for integrating HIV services into primary healthcare settings, we revised and adapted the tool to tailor the PCC-AT for HIV-integrated PHC settings and incorporate innovative PCC practices into the original tool.
