Characterizing C-Reactive Protein in the Daasanach, a semi-nomadic pastoralist community in Northern Kenya

Project overview

This project was conducted as part of a semi-longitudinal study of health and life history in the Daasanach, a semi-nomadic, pastoralist population in Northern Kenya. This project sought to characterize inflammatory status, using C-reactive protein and other biomarkers of inflammation, in this population due to its relatively constrained energetic status, high levels of activity, and limited market access. Although the contribution of these factors to chronic inflammation have been explored in high-income populations, these relationships have not yet been analyzed among the Daasanach. These data both yield insights into the health status of the Daasanach community, but also provide additional context for understanding the relationships between energetic availability and chronic inflammation in higher-income settings.
