Facilitators and Barriers to Advancing Oral Health on the Global Agenda: A Qualitative Study with Key Oral Health Stakeholders

Project overview

Globally, 3.5 billion people had untreated oral conditions (dental caries, severe periodontitis, and edentulism) in 2015. Untreated dental caries, or tooth decay, is the single most prevalent health condition across the globe. However, dental care is often neglected in universal health coverage benefit plans despite its averaging 5% of total health expenditure and 20% of out-of-pocket expenditure. The present study aims to explore oral health’s positioning on the global health agenda. By engaging stakeholders with a direct stake in global health policy outcomes, we seek to qualitatively assess the prioritization status of global health based on such factors as policy declarations and funding provisions. Subsequently, the study will aim to understand why oral health occupies the position it does on the global health agenda.
