This session will explore the intersection between power, resources and equity in global health collaborations, with a focus on data as a commodity in research. Dr. Bethany Hedt-Gauthier will provide case-examples of how data is generated, shared, and governed from her own collaborations, concluding with recommendations and points requiring further exploration. 

A panel discussion will follow, featuring Dr. Hedt-Gauthier; Dr. Osondu Ogbuoji, DGHI assistant research professor and deputy director of the Center for Policy Impact in Global Health; and Dr. Thiago Hernandes Rocha, advisor on public health data analysis for the Pan-American Health Organization.  

Speakers

Bethany Hedt-Gauthier

Bethany Hedt-Gauthier is a biostatistician with nearly 20 years of experience in health systems research to optimize care and outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. Her primary research is on care pathways for women delivering via c-section, including the use of mHealth technologies to support community health workers to provide postoperative follow-up. Part of her portfolio includes the study of equity in global health research collaborations and includes building and evaluating training models for in-country research. Dr. Hedt-Gauthier has been recognized for her collaborative efforts, including leading teams that received the Statistical Partnerships between Academia, Industry and Government award from the American Statistical Association and the Technology Accelerator Challenge Prize from the National Institutes of Health.

Osondu Ogbuoji

Osondu Ogbuoji is an Assistant Research Professor at DGHI and Deputy Director at the Center for Policy Impact in Global Health at DGHI. His primary research interest is in making health systems work better for the poor. At Duke, he investigates the impact of health financing policies on the availability, affordability, and acceptability of essential health interventions in low- and middle-income countries. Part of this work includes using large country datasets to explore causes of disparities in maternal and child health outcomes.

Thiago Hernandes Rocha

Dr. Thiago Rocha is an advisor on health data analysis for the Pan American Health Organization. He works with projects in the area of ​​public health, with an emphasis on public policy evaluation and data mining in health. He has experience in the area of ​​public administration and performance evaluation, working on the following topics: evaluation of public policies, development of performance evaluation methodologies, data mining, geoprocessing, performance management, process mapping, organizational restructuring, structuring of health information technology, mHealth, Business Intelligence, BIG DATA and data science applied to management.

Wendy Prudhomme O’Meara (Moderator)

Wendy Prudhomme O’Meara’s main areas of research expertises are malaria and implementation science. She is an Associate Professor at Duke University Medical School in the Division of Infectious Diseases, visiting professor at Moi University, and the Co-Field Director of Research for AMPATH. She has been based full-time in Kenya since 2007. Dr. O'Meara has experience in marrying innovative spatial techniques with epidemiologic outcomes. Recent work includes an analysis of health systems factors that contribute to early childhood mortality in sub-Saharan Africa.
