The Future of Nursing in an Era of Health Reform: Implications for the basic and nurse practitioner workforces

Peter I. Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAAN, will give the 2015 Harriet Cook Carter Lecture. The title of his talk is "The future of nursing in an era of health reform: Implications for the basic and nurse practitioner workforces." The presentation will cover major trends in hospital and non-hospital employment in the United States; projections of the supply of RNs from 2015-2030; trends in the number of graduates of associate, baccalaureate and graduate nursing education programs, and trends in the number and type of nursing education programs over the period 2002-2013; and how primary care nurse practitioners differ from primary care physicians with regard to perceptions of the scope of nursing practice, quality of care, teamwork and collaboration, etc.
