December 12, 2016

Huijia Yu was a member of the 2015-2016 Bass Connections team "Environmental Epidemiology in Latin America: Leishmania." We talked with her to learn more about the project and her hopes for its outcomes.

Name: Huijia Yu
Hometown: Mexico City, Mexico
Majors: Statistics and computer science
Graduation Date: 2018

Why did you join this Bass Connections project?

I thought it would be interesting to see a different part of the world. I am interested in infectious disease and thought it would a project that would be a good fit for someone with my background because it requires the study of statistics and data analysis.

What has been the best part of Peru/the project?

It has been so interesting to interact directly with Peru’s Ministry of Health and local health officials, and see how they view these diseases and what they can and can’t do to help.

What do you hope to accomplish as part of this project?

It has been great being part of the research team. I feel like we are accomplishing a lot with our projects. We’re trying to make an impact on the community with our work as well as with some of our community education activities (called "charlas").
