Developing a Regional Cancer Registry in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

1.To conduct a needs assessment related to cancer registry development in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. 2. To create a sustainable foundation for developing a population-based cancer registry in the Kilimanjaro region, based at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center.

Assessing the perceptions of healthcare providers and administrators is a critical foundation for establishing a sustainable population-based cancer registry. Without a clear understanding of these organizational perceptions cancer registry expansion and development might not be aligned with the organization’s values and needs. Our long-term goal is to lay the foundation for the highest-quality cancer research, clinical care, and policy development in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. As part of the ongoing parent project, an inventory of registry-related resources that are already in place at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) has been planned. Despite the best available resources, understanding perceptions and attitudes of the healthcare workforce surrounding cancer registry activities are critical to successful implementation.
