Duke Engage 2023

This summer, three Duke Engage programs have been pre-approved to count as a global health experiential learning activity (ELA). Although these programs are pre-approved, all students must still submit a pre-approval form so that we can provide you with other required ELA paperwork. Other Duke Enagage programs not listed below can be petitioned to count toward a student's ELA requirement. Please read more about our specific policies and deadlines on the DGHI website

Improving Health and Environment Through Education and Awareness - Ghana

Students will be engaged in an educational campaign to raise awareness about the toxicity of heavy metals in used motor oil and its implications on human health, the environment, and food security.

This program is open to all, and might especially appeal to students in Engineering and Environmental Science, Global Health, Environmental Science, or Public Policy, as well as students who want to use their education for a humanitarian course.

Designing Engineer Solutions for Low-income Healthcare Delivery - Uganda

Duke students will partner with engineering students at Makerere University to design engineering solutions for the healthcare system in Uganda. Student teams will spend the first two weeks of the program learning about existing problems, by observing healthcare delivery and interviewing healthcare workers. During the second half of the summer, students will complete the engineering design process to create solutions to identified high-impact problems. Students will work alongside Makerere students to construct a prototype using only materials that are readily available in Uganda. At the end of the summer, student teams will present their ideas to engineering faculty and clinical partners.

Stem and Health in Rural Kenya (WISER) - Kenya

Dr. Broverman, after having worked in Kenya for many years researching the role of gender in HIV infection rates, founded the NGO WISER in Kenya and WISER International in the US. Together these organizations have created a highly successful model for reducing HIV risk in girls and producing high-achieving leaders from a poor, traditionally low-performing community.

Duke students will assist WISER to empower girls and communities through transformative education and holistic health. WISER accomplishes this through a range of interventions that include health, education, STEM entrepreneurship, and leadership development. Partners will include high school girls enrolled in the WISER secondary school in Kenya and their teachers; primary school boys and girls and teachers; local health programs; a local clinic; and community groups.

Please note: specific start and end dates vary by program.

Students can learn more about the individual programs and information regarding travel, housing, and program requirements by visiting the Duke Engage website. Applications for Summer 2023 are due on January 18th at Midnight.
