A New Life: Exploring the Maternal Healthcare Experiences of Somali Refugee Women in North Carolina

Project overview

This project assesses whether Somali refugee women in North Carolina have had positive or negative maternal healthcare experiences. This study also analyzes the social and structural factors that shape the maternal healthcare experiences of Somali refugees. Several social and structural factors that impact maternal healthcare experiences, such as agency in health decision-making, are rarely noted in the literature. This study seeks to explore these elements in addition to other factors, such as the language barrier, that are understudied in the North Carolina context. The overall aim of this study is to inform healthcare providers and policymakers of practices and policies that can improve the maternal healthcare experiences of Somali refugee women.
